Lack of Transparency and BILL inflated through unethical ways

It is OK to have high cost of treatment as the patient is well aware of the cost beforehand but unethical ways of increasing the bill especially for patients with insurance policies is a serious issue.

I have visited the hospital in (20-23) Nov 2016 and have availed cashless hospitalization for my wife. The rooms were clean with no smell, the nursing staff was nice but the billing is inflated with the medicines that have never been used. Further it took approx 7-8 hours in getting the discharge summary and the billing done.

There is a lack of transparency and the patient is supposed to believe in the Doctor as a GOD to whom no questions should be asked. The hospital rules doesn’t allow us to have a copy or even see the patient’s daily status file. The hospital staff states that the report is confidential and the patient will be given the discharge summary for any future reference but it seems that the actual reason is that this report contains info on the daily comments and prescriptions by the doctor and would give a lot more insights not just into the treatment provided but also the medicines used else how could a patients info is confidential from the patient himself/herself. Somehow I was able to point out few discrepancies in the bill and raised this to the billing staff, Dr Chanda (Medical Superintendent), reception but the onus of proving the same is on the patient. I spent more than 90 minutes and proved that I was correct and the excess medicine was returned to me as well but the point here is that being in non-medical profession, I might be able to notice only a few discrepancies and there could be many more resulting in inflated billing.
Example:
– There were 2 units of blood transfusions and 5 sets of BT unit has been charged.
– Cotton and some other consumable items has been brought by me but still included in the bill.
– Blood Units has been brought by me but still seems to be included in the bill.
– Multiple Pathology test some of which were not needed and done without the consent of the patient.

The hospital is not accepting RS 500/1000 notes, which is fine but in case of refund, the hospital staff forces the patient to take the refund in RS 500/1000 notes citing the reason that they don’t have other notes. This is not ethical.

Therefore I request the hospital administration to look into such issues and stop these practices so as to save the hospital reputation. Please have a proper grievance redressal process. The current mechanism of just having a register for the same is not sufficient.
