I hope this message finds you well.
I am writing to bring to your urgent attention a disturbing case of misrepresentation, coercion, and negligence by UpGrad, a leading EdTech company, in their Study Abroad program in collaboration with Northeastern University (NEU). My experience is not an isolated one—dozens of students have faced similar treatment, and it is high time this issue is exposed for public scrutiny.
Earlier this year, I enrolled in UpGrad’s NEU program and made an initial payment of ₹25,000 after being told that the amount was fully refundable in case of any unforeseen issues. Unfortunately, a sudden medical emergency in my family (my mother was hospitalized with severe migraines) forced me to drop my study abroad plans. I immediately informed my assigned counselor Rohit and the NEU program manager Rahul on 6th July 2025, just two days after the offer letter was issued.
Since then, I have received no response, no refund, and no accountability—despite repeated calls and messages. Their silence during my time of crisis has been both unethical and inhumane.
What the Public Needs to Know:
High-Pressure Sales Tactics
Students, including myself, are placed on high-pressure sales calls with multiple representatives and are told to pay immediately or risk losing their seats. There is no time to review documentation or terms before payment is demanded.
Hidden Non-Refundable Clauses
The brochure and verbal communication never mentioned non-refundable fees. These clauses appear only in the offer letter, which is conveniently sent at the moment of payment, effectively trapping students before they can object.
Negligent and Unresponsive Behavior
Once payment is made, students receive little to no support. In my case, even a medical emergency did not prompt a callback or any human response. This shows a shocking lack of empathy and student support.
Growing Pattern of Complaints
This is not just my story. Many students have shared similar experiences. A petition highlighting these systemic issues is already live with growing support:

I strongly believe this is a consumer rights issue and a student welfare concern that deserves media attention. With EdTech companies expanding rapidly and targeting vulnerable students, their practices must be transparent, ethical, and accountable—especially when careers and finances are on the line.
As a respected media platform, I urge you to help bring visibility to this issue so that other students are not exploited under similar circumstances. I am also open to sharing further details, proof of payment, communications, and timelines if your team would like to investigate this further.
Thank you for your time, and I hope you will consider giving voice to this growing issue.
