while travelleing throuh Doha i unintentionally used the phone data while downloading a book instead of the wifi. i suppose wifi dropped out and i had made the mistake of not turning off data. But dpwnloaed happened in only 3 minutes. i then recived 30 text messages advsising me of the charges in $ 100 increments until it finally stopped at $3,100. i turned off the phone completely as soon as i realised the book had used billed data, but it was too late. i do not know how, in any country, 3 minutes of data use could justify a $3,100 bill from a phone company.

Further, it is unethical to allow such a huge charge to accumulate especially on an account where such activity is highly unusual. Companies offering credited services have also a responsibility to customers. there should be an auto bar at a reasonable amount. Phone data should have been capped at say 300, the service temporarily barred, and a courtesey call made to the customer to advise them of unusual activity. Just as a credit card does.

After discusing with Vodafone about it and explaimimng that it was obvioulsy unintentional, i was offered a 50% discount. However, when by bill came the full amount was charged and Vodafone denied reducing the amount payable. The person was dismissive, unhelpful and unwilling to believe me that the previous phone call had taken place.
even though the date, time and duration is recoreded on my phone log. And so the 50% reduction was retracted.

I am not poor and this incident however resolved will hurt me but not break me, but for many others, it really could. And i want to help to change the ethical behaviour of such companies, call them to account and take responsibility to not allow anyone to unwittingly accumulate such vast charges in minutes, leaving them without no chance to opt put before its too late.

Howe about a ‘do you really want to proceed’ prompt or capped data? it is easy for Vodafone to implement changes, but they do not and so unethically glean highly questionable charges from trusting customers.

Now i am deciding what next.
